new album "the Score"

A decade on from our last foray into the studio, we're excited to announce the release of a new album!

We've called it The Score, a nod to our 20 year anniversary, and a marking of long-shared lives, friendships and adventures.  The journey has taken us from Canberra, to Melbourne, to far-off shores, and now sees the four of us spread between Coburg and Candelo, Engadine and Fitzroy.  After a few quieter years on the Trubs front, this project has been a chance to tap back into the buzz that got us moving two decades ago; it's had us thinking of the people whose music we've shared along the way; and as ever it's driven by that constant imperative: crank it up!

We'll be giving the album it's first launch at the 2018 National Folk Festival in Canberra, with dates to come in Melbourne, Sydney and beyond.

Out Now: The Freewheeler

Now here is something we have wanted to do for a long time... Dougal Adams is one of Australia's great unsung trad legends, and Ado and Benno are more than a bit stoked to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him in this album.

One slightly unusual aspect of album is that we recorded on flat-pitched "c" instruments, a rare-enough thing in the Australian Irish scene, which we think adds a real richness and depth to the tunes.  Also we should give a big shout-out to fellow Trubster Joe Ferguson who did a wonderful job on the recording-production side.

From Ado's CD notes:

‘Anyone who’s been caught by this music will know the feeling, when it’s really flowing, of the tunes somehow playing themselves - perhaps it’s the combination of time and shared experience that does it, but often when we sit down to play it feels like the music just sets itself loose.  Recorded live over a chilly Melbourne weekend, this album is an effort to capture a few of those fleeting moments, to catch the elusive sound of the music rolling free.'

Our own Kate Burke has once again teamed up with Ruth Hazleton to release an absolutley sublime album of folksong, "Declaration".

With production from audio-wunderkind Luke Plumb, this is an album that artfully rides the line between saying something new and fresh, while paying real respect to the traditions it comes out of.

The Freewheeler recording
For the last couple of years Ado and Benno have had the great pleasure of doing the occasional gig with flute-maestro and long time and friend-of-trouble Dougal Adams, under the name the Freewheeler.

The mix of Dougal's low C flute and Ado's tuned-down fiddle, together with some lovely delicate guitar work from Benno, gave the music a distinctive swinging groove - a groove that we really wanted to try and capture in a recording.

The recording took place at Dougal's plush converted warehouse in Melbourne over the coarse of a cold and rainy August weekend - And what a great session it was!  The key was to try and keep a live (and lively) vibe and, ably assisted by Trouble's own Joe Ferguson as sound engineer, we could not be happier with the results.

The Freewheeler album will be out near the end of the year, so be sure to look out for a launch gig near you!

Kate is about to embark on a rather beautiful and remarkable recording project; being Michael Kennedy's guitar fingers, as he's no longer able to grace us with his presence... working on an album of his wonderful songs with a host of great singers, plus John McCusker, Michael McGoldrick, James MacKintosh and Luke Plumb. Here's Luke's description of the project.

Well, it's official - after a four year hiatus Trouble in the Kitchen is back! And what a way to get stuck back in...

We had an absolute blast playing at the National Folk Festival in Canberra over Easter, and were more than a little blown away at the reception we got.

Safe to say we are more excited than ever to get Trouble out and about again, and will keep you posted on all the upcoming shows and developments

First photo from our secret rehearsal space that in no way resembles Joe's Mum's place...

After many years break, preparations are now nearly complete for our re-emergence at this years National Folk Festival in Canberra.  It's been great to polish up our old favourites, but we have also been stoked with how nicely our new material is coming together... We can't wait!
